Task Settings

In Coppola you can configure settings on the task level and on a specific method of a given task. This page provides an overview of both setting types and how to use them.

Task Level Settings

  • Hover over a task name and click the three dots on the right to bring up a link to the Task settings.

  • The task settings will appear in the work space window:

  • Task Settings you can configure include:

    • Description: A description of the task. These are used to document design decisions and, optionally, to inform AI Generation of task methods.

    • Priority: By changing the priority on a task you can bias the AI director's selection of that task. High priority tasks that are compatible with the current world state will be selected before medium priority tasks which will, in turn, be selected before low priority tasks.

    • Allow Director Initiation: When checked, this box allows the director to freely select this task for an NPC. When unchecked this task will only be used as a subtask inside another task or if triggered in some other way by the player.

    • Dialogue Entry Point: This box should be checked if the task is triggered by the player walking up to an NPC and initiating dialogue with them.

    • Task Parameters: A variable or placeholder that allows roles and props to be generically specified without being tied to specific characters or props.

Method Level Settings

  • Hover over a method name and click the three dots on the right to bring up a link to the settings for that method of a task.

  • The method settings modal has two tabs: one for settings and the other for conditions and effects.

  • Settings you can configure include:

    • Description: A description of the task. These are used to document design decisions and, optionally, to inform AI Generation of task methods.

    • Frequency of method occurence: Toggle this to Once to restrict the AI director to only select this task once. Keep it at the default of Unlimited to enable repeat selection of this task.

  • Conditions & Effects:

    • Conditions: Enables you to gate specific methods behind preconditions (e.g. an NPC must be holding a specific item, an NPC must have a specific affinity toward the player...etc.)

    • Effects: Enables you to setup an effect the task has on the world state (e.g. an NPC now likes the player more.)
